CJ Swears In Tax Appeals Tribunal

The Chief Justice on Friday  swore in members of the Tax Appeals Tribunal at a function held at the High Court in Kampala.

The five-member Tribunal chaired by Dr Asa Mugenyi was appointed last month but was yet to discharge their functions because they had not taken of allegiance and the judicial oath. The Tribunal is a quasi-judicial institution established to settle tax disputes between taxpayers and the Uganda Revenue Authority (URA).

Other members of the Tribunal are Dr. Stephen Besweri Akabway, Mr. George Wilson Mugerwa, Mrs. Christine Nalubega Katwe and Mr. Siraj Ali.

While commissioning the tribunal members for work the Chief Justice, Hon Justice Bart Katureebe urged the Tribunal to always make quick decisions. "URA has made an assessment, I object to it, I go to the Tax Appeals Tribunal, I expect to get a quick decision and go on with business", he said.

He urged the Tribunal to work harder so that there is no backlog. The Tribunal which will serve for a renewable term of three years was appointed by the Minister of Finance, Planning and Development.

The Chairperson of Tribunal, Dr. Asa Mugenyi, applauded the Supreme Court for its decision requiring that all tax appeals to be heard by the TAT. "I appreciate the Supreme Court for the confidence in the Tax Appeals Tribunal, we shall not let the Supreme Court and the country down," he said. He also thanked the Chief Justice and JLOS Leadership Committee for the support rendered to the Tribunal.
